A day trip to Oxford

We have always talked, in passing, about going to Oxford one day to see what all the fuss is about. Yesterday that 'one day' arrived and we hopped into the car, zipped along the M4 and boarded the park and ride into the city feeling proud that we were exploring new territory.

I have always been curious to see what Oxford is like, having grown up near Cambridge. We had few plans other than to wander through the historic streets and see what we happened upon. With the help of the TripAdvisor app, we managed to find most of the main sights including the Bodleian Library, the University Church of St.Mary and the Bridge of Sighs. A trip inside the famous Blackwells bookshop was memorable not only for perusing the reams of fantastic modern fiction books (my perspective) but also for a sneaky sighting of the Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke. Let's just say that I now know how coolly giddy  Joe can be when starstruck.

We had a light lunch at a lovely studenty cafe; sharing a halloumi, squash and chilli jam ciabatta and washing it down with freshly squeezed orange juice and a banana berry smoothie. After lunch we took another little wander around the parks and towards the Pitts River musem (which was quite underwhelming) before calling it a day just as the wind reached a crescendo of bluster and the rain started hammering down. The drive back to Bristol was unique. It was one of those journeys when the full speed windscreen wiper setting worked its socks off whilst proving ineffective for the most part.

After a weekend of feeling under the weather, we took the easy option for dinner and ordered the winter warmer deal from Dominoes. An obscene amount of food mostly devoured by me. It was lush.

We really liked Oxford and plan to return in the summer when the weather is warmer to do a walking tour and learn more about the history of the city. I am already dreaming of walking around in my flip flops and stopping for a pub lunch by the river. Oh how we will laugh about the January storms in a few months time.
